August 27 - Commission Meeting Recap

The Jefferson County Commission met, vetted and approved 101 resolutions this week. Here is a rundown. You can watch both the Pre-Commission and Commission meetings on our website live stream archive.

Presentations:

Commissioners recognized the life and dedicated service of Jefferson County employee Amanda "Mandy" Elledge who died unexpectedly on July 28, 2026. Her family attended to accept the proclamation.

Public Hearings:

There were five public hearings, and all passed.

The first was on a special jobs grant for the U.S. Steel Tubular Operations facility for their them to expand the steel pipe processing plant that use quench and temp technology. The project will create 152 new jobs with an average wage of $35.36 an hour with a capital investment of $463,000,000.
The other four were for special assessments for demolition costs for properties at: 318 Elm St. SW, 322 Pine St SW, 432 Alabama Ave SW, and 5379 Salina Ave. Once citizen was present and felt like his property was singled out, but once the situation was explained, he seemed to understand.

Resolutions of note include:

Roads and Transportation Rebuild Alabama County Transportation plan. These are how our "gas tax" dollars are going to be spent. Half goes to contract paving and half goes to the purchase of materials for in house paving. On tap next year for contract paving are Walkers Chapel Rd, Rex Lake Rd, Cain Creek Rd, Eastern Valley Rd and McAshan. It should be noted that in house paving crews have already completed over 120 miles of paving this year.

Community Grants by District:

District 1: Commissioner Scales

Grant with the Birmingham Board of Education for general education purposes at WJ Christian Academy for $3,000.

District 2: Commissioner Tyson

Community grant with Jefferson County DA's Foundation for $5,560 to assist with programs that benefit Jefferson County male youth in the area of conflict resolution, academic readiness, career and athletic goal planning.

District 3: Commissioner Stephens

Community grant with the Jefferson County Board of Education for $15,000 to assist Hueytown High School Football program with their new Athletic Improvements Project.
Community grant with the Bessemer Chamber of Commerce for $7,500 to assist with funding to replace the HVAC unit for the facility.

District 4: Commissioner Knight

Community grant with the Center Point Fire District for $15,000 to assist with the purchase of a service support unit.
Community grant with the Town of Morris for $60,000 to assist with the revitalization of the Town's park by adding a stage for community events.
Community Infrastructure grant with the City of Clay for $50,000 to assist with its ballpark improvement project.
Community Infrastructure grant to the Palmerdale Fire District for $30,000 to assist with the purchase of a fire truck.

District 5: Commissioner Bolin

Community grant with the City of Homewood for $5,000 to assist the Homewood Fire Dept with the purchase of an urban search and rescue camera system.
Community grant with Leeds Schools Educational Foundation for $5,000 to support its workforce development initiative with Lees High school's Media and Communications program.
Community grant with Vulcan Park and Museum for $30,000 (D4-$10,000; D3 - $10,000; D5 - $10,000) to support a roof project.
Community grant with UnlessU for $10,000 to provide programs for adults with disabilities.
Community grant with Prescott House Child Advocacy Center for $10,000 to help with efforts to provide intervention, forensic interviews, and counseling to minimize trauma and promote healing for child victims.
Community grant with City of Homewood for $30,000 to assist with sidewalk repairs along Virginia Drive
Community grant with the Birmingham Boys Choir for $5,000 to support the purchase of educational materials for music training.
Community grant to the Homewood Police Foundation for $10,000 to assist with the purchase of a drone.
Community grant to the City of Mtn. Brook for $10,000 to assist the Police Dept in refurbishing its classroom.
Community grant with Leeds Main Street for $38,500 to assist with its enterprise-wide cybersecurity project.
Community grant with the City of Hoover for $30,000 to aid in funding for the Hoover Lake House project.
Community grant with the City of Vestavia for $30,000 to assist with enhancing Altadena Valley Park
